Tether has frozen more than $4.5 million in USDT linked to a security incident at Mercado Bitcoin, the Brazilian crypto platform. Tether chief executive Paolo Ardoino said the tokens were blocked. That stops the identified USDT from moving or being redeemed while the investigation continues; it does not send the tokens back to the exchange or restore control to whoever lost it.
Mercado Bitcoin temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals as it investigated the incident and tracked the affected assets. The exchange says the breach was contained, customers suffered no harm, and no data was breached.
That division of control is the key mechanic. USDT runs on public blockchains, but Tether can blacklist tokens through issuer controls. Bitcoin has no central issuer that can lock coins this way. In an active investigation, that gives exchanges and investigators a containment tool, but a freeze is not recovery. The freeze restricts more than $4.5 million in USDT, but does not establish that the exchange has recovered those funds.
