Standard Chartered is now offering eligible wealth clients in the UAE the ability to trade Bitcoin and Ether directly through their existing bank accounts. This service, announced on October 14 and licensed by Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority, is the first of its kind from an international bank in that market.

Traditionally, a client interested in adding crypto to a portfolio would have to move funds to a separate crypto platform or set up an independent wallet, stepping outside the main banking relationship. Now, Professional Investor clients in the UAE can execute spot trades for Bitcoin and Ether within the bank’s own platform. That makes the process simpler by removing an extra operational step.

This is best understood as a distribution development rather than a price story. It gives affluent clients access to crypto trading inside an existing bank relationship instead of routing through a separate venue. Standard Chartered says that integrated setup is now live for its initial UAE client base.

The open question is whether this model stays niche or becomes a template other global banks will follow.
