Standard Chartered has begun offering spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether to institutional clients through its Dubai International Financial Centre entity, making it the first Global Systemically Important Bank to provide that access in the UAE. This is a notable step because GSIBs are the large banks whose failure would be considered a risk to the wider financial system, so they operate under the heaviest regulatory scrutiny. Eligible clients can execute deliverable Bitcoin and Ether trading through the bank’s existing electronic trading infrastructure rather than a separate crypto native venue. Clients can also settle with their preferred custodian, including Standard Chartered’s own Dubai based digital asset custody platform, which launched in 2024. The move expands the bank’s digital asset business in the UAE and brings spot Bitcoin and Ether trading into the same institutional workflow clients already use through Standard Chartered.
