Circle has bought IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio: more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide. Circle says that gives it the largest blockchain patent portfolio in the US.
This is not just a headline for the company behind USDC. IBM’s patents cover core blockchain systems along with banking, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply-chain verification, and secure cloud operations. In plain terms, Circle now controls a large body of intellectual property tied to the kinds of systems big institutions care about.
That could matter in three ways. It can help Circle defend its own technology, strike licensing deals, and reassure banks or corporate partners that want clearer legal cover around the infrastructure they use. IBM built this portfolio over years of work in trade finance, supply chains, and financial services. Now those patents sit with a company trying to turn stablecoin and onchain payment infrastructure into mainstream financial plumbing. The real test is whether Circle uses that portfolio to deepen USDC’s role in regulated digital payments.
