Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade is now live on mainnet. It replaces TowerBFT, the system that determined when transactions were final. Under TowerBFT, finality usually took about 32 slots, or nearly 13 seconds. Alpenglow targets finality in about 150 milliseconds.
For users, that means the settlement step should be much faster, while apps, fees, and the Solana Virtual Machine stay the same. Mainnet explorers and monitoring dashboards are already showing Alpenglow, with recent slot times averaging a little over 200 milliseconds. The important part is not the target on paper. It is whether the live chain can keep delivering that kind of speed consistently under everyday conditions.
