BlackRock is adding a new choice to the Bitcoin lineup: a protected ETF that narrows both the risk and the reward. The iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, ticker PBIT, would give investors a capped share of Bitcoin’s upside, while aiming to buffer a portion of losses on the downside. The structure here is key. Rather than just holding spot Bitcoin, the fund blends Bitcoin-linked options with bond and cash holdings. The options are designed to limit how much upside investors can access, essentially putting a ceiling in exchange for protection if Bitcoin drops. But the protection isn’t absolute; BlackRock makes it clear that outcomes can vary and that there’s still a risk of loss.
Access to Bitcoin is getting specific. Instead of a single path in or out, issuers are designing different wrappers for different kinds of risk tolerance. For investors who want exposure without full drawdown risk, a protected ETF is one answer. At the other end, there are products like Kalshi’s Bitcoin perpetual futures. Those trade around the clock and do not expire. Webull is already distributing Kalshi’s regulated Bitcoin perps to retail clients. The core story isn’t about Bitcoin prices moving, but about how the industry is packaging Bitcoin into versions that match what different investors want from risk and control.
