Starknet is putting a core question to its community: should the network explore becoming an independent chain instead of remaining an Ethereum layer two? Voting opened October 15 and runs through October 22, but this is not a decision to leave. It is a chance to signal whether formal research into independence is warranted.
The immediate driver is post-quantum security. StarkWare, the main developer, said last week that being an L one would let Starknet move faster on upgrades, especially security features that could defend against future quantum threats. Independence would also mean more direct control over its security model and upgrade timetable, instead of staying tied to Ethereum’s pace.
But the trade-off is significant. As a layer two, Starknet has benefited from settling back to Ethereum, which helped give it credibility. Going solo would mean rethinking that model. So this is less a market story than a governance and architecture decision. The real checkpoint is not the poll result alone, but whether the community wants formal research into whether greater self-direction is worth that trade-off.
