Mexico’s national football team has returned Rolex watches worth around $1 million after FIFA ethics questions over the gift’s source and intent. The watches were given by Stephen Deleonardis, better known online as SteveWillDoIt, a US content creator who reportedly said he had placed a $2 million bet on Mexico to beat Ecuador and then presented the watches after the team advanced. That raised immediate questions under FIFA’s Code of Ethics, which says gifts are only acceptable if they have symbolic or trivial value and do not create a conflict of interest or improper influence. The code also says that if there is any doubt, the gift should not be accepted, and if refusing it would cause offence, it can only be accepted on behalf of the organisation and handed over to the proper authority. Mexico’s federation said the players and coaching staff returned the watches by mutual agreement after the gifts drew scrutiny during the tournament. Potential penalties under FIFA rules can include fines, the return of the gift, and suspensions in serious cases.
