The T3 Financial Crime Unit, a partnership between Tether, Tron and blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, was reportedly dissolved in late August 2026, less than 2 years after its launch in September 2024. It was built to combine on-chain tracing, Tether’s ability to freeze its dollar token, and cooperation with law enforcement across borders.

The reported reason was operational: participants struggled with slow response times and weak coordination. That matters because freezing illicit tokens depends on more than an issuer’s authority. Investigators also need a fast route to identify funds, escalate requests and agree who acts. Tether said in May 2026 the unit had frozen more than $450 million in illicit assets.

The formal three-party unit is gone, but Tether says it will continue working with TRM to disrupt illicit funds through the Beacon Network, a separate real-time intelligence-sharing system launched by TRM in August 2025. Beacon links law enforcement and private-sector participants; it is not the same standing task force focused on Tether’s dollar-token activity on Tron. Tron is expected to pursue separate crime-fighting measures.

The change is in the enforcement structure, not a stated end to freezes. What happens next is a shift from one formal joint unit to separate channels for intelligence-sharing and enforcement coordination.
