Ethena has released the beta version of Ethena Pay on Avalanche, rolling out a stablecoin payments app that puts USDe at the center of everyday spending, not just trading. The app’s design is new ground for stablecoin wallets: users keep control of their own wallet keys, and the interface is built around local-currency onramps, peer-to-peer transfers, and card payments, with balances inside the app converted into USDe and used as a spending balance. Ethena’s stated goal is to make salaries, bills, and daily purchases run on USDe, shifting the stablecoin’s role from speculative trading to a genuine payment rail.
A major part of the beta launch is the cashback system, which credits rewards in Avalanche, Avalanche’s native token, converted at the credited time’s rate. Eligible card purchases in the beta earn between 4% and 5% back, depending on user tier, with additional rewards offered on qualifying balances. That ties Avalanche’s token directly to consumer payments, not just DeFi trades.
This launch tests whether stablecoins like USDe can actually cross into routine payment use, or whether they stay confined to trading and yield. The beta is still limited by region and eligibility, and all rewards are subject to detailed terms. After this launch, it will become clear whether users make USDe their default for transfers, bills, and card settlement, or if the app just becomes another place to park balances for rewards.
