Western Union and Rain have launched StableCard, a direct-to-consumer stablecoin card product covering 37 markets. Stablecoin settlement runs on Solana, Western Union’s U.S. dollar stablecoin USDPT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, and Rain provides both the card infrastructure and the wallet experience.
The result is a self-custody USDPT wallet app paired with a Visa payment card, so remittance recipients can hold digital dollars and spend them anywhere Visa is accepted.
The real test is behavioral, not technical. Western Union is trying to see whether recipients stop treating remittances as something to cash out immediately and instead keep part of that balance in stablecoins to spend directly in stores or online.
If that habit changes, remittance shifts from a one-time transfer into an ongoing payments relationship, and that’s what could matter most here.
