Tether is investing $20 million in Mercado Bitcoin, a major crypto and tokenization platform in Latin America. Mercado Bitcoin says it serves 4.5 million users and has issued more than 2 billion Brazilian reais in tokenized assets.

Why this stands out is where the money is going. This is not a celebrity tie-up or a marketing deal. Tether is backing a local operator with regulatory approvals in place, including a payment institution license from Brazil’s central bank.

The bigger point is that Tether is putting capital into the plumbing of digital finance in the region: payments, tokenized assets, and on-chain markets. It has already backed Parfin, another Latin American infrastructure player, so this looks like a continued bet on local financial rails rather than a one-off investment.
